We understand that caving isn't for everyone, but we have also heard many people in the caving community say that they thought they'd hate it... and now they absolutely love it! This could be you.
You may be thinking that caving is 100% tight, crawly and miserable. For some this may be true, but not all caves live up popular culture. In fact, caving offers something for everyone. Some are as cavernous as Lincoln Cathedral some are crawly, muddy and wet... some are very vertical requiring technical rope access. We also explore old mines, which appeal to those with an interest the industrial past. Some people have an interest in speleology... underground photography, rescue, leadership and more.
If you enjoy a "Try Caving Day" with us, you can join as a member and we'll train you up in all the skills required to find your specific niche or passion for this unique sport.
Our Try Caving Days are free. The only cost would be a contribution to fuel if we share cars. So how do they work?
Follow our Facebook page where we generally advertise these events.
Complete the Interest Form which will be shared with the advertisement post. We'll then contact you and provide you with a trip form and further details.
We'll meet you on the stated day, generally in Skellingthorpe, introduce ourselves and provide you with your equipment for the day.
Check out our FAQ's at the bottom of this page.
The day will start at 08:30 in Skellingthorpe, Lincoln.
Once introduced, we'll arrange car sharing and head out to the Peak District... which is about a 1.5 hour drive.
We'll re-group at a convenient location for a toilet, coffee, food stop (typically between 10-10:30am).
We'll then head to the parking spot closest to the cave and get changed.
We'll typically be underground for about 11-11:30am, and will be caving for about 3-4 hours. The caves chosen for Try Caving Days are novice friendly.
After caving, we'll get changed. Sometimes we'll head to a cafe or pub afterwards if people are up for it.
We'll then drive back to Skellingthorpe, typically returning around 7pm.
If you find that you enjoyed you caving experience, we'd welcome you to join the club 😄
Caving is an adventure activity full of physical challenges and an outlet for a real explorer’s spirit, not to mention a great way to keep fit.
It is an experience of nature unlike any other - not just close to nature but within nature itself.
The experience is incredibly rewarding where magical sights, thousands of years in the making, sculpted rocks and the delicate formations are a joy to behold.
The caver may walk, twist and squeeze, they may climb, stoop and crawl, and they may plunge, wade and swim; ascending and descending through the wonderful spaces left between rock and water.
For the beginner there is a unique delight waiting to be discovered. For the experienced caver there is a world of subterranean labyrinths to explore .
The safety and wellbeing of those participating in underground exploration is of paramount importance, and the British Caving Association (BCA) works hard to improve caving safety.
Caving, like any outdoor pursuit, carries inherent risks. However, like many things, caving is safe if done properly. The BCA works hard to research and publicise the safest equipment and techniques for use in British Caving, and Lincoln Caving Club follows the BCA's best practices.
Lincoln Caving Club will provide you with the required safety equipment and our Try Caving Day leads are experienced cavers who have undergone training in cave leadership training in recent years.
Lincoln Caving Club has was formed in 1983 and has facilitated novice caving since formation. The caves used for Try Caving Days have been risk assessed.
When we go caving, a callout time is provided and monitored by a club member, who will initate help should they not recieve a notifcation of the group being back on the surface.

Caving is a physical activty. For Try Caving Days, you will be ok if you can walk up a flight of stairs unaided without being out of breath.
Caving will involve crawling at some point, potenially on your belly for a very short period. You may also be required to climb a caving ladder (whilst on a lifeline). As Try Caving Days are introductory, most of the trip will be walking or stooping (walking slighly bent over).
If you have a medical concern, reach out to us at lincscaving@gmail.com and we'd be happy to discuss.
